Does anyone know if ultrox and zircopax can be substituted. I haave no
ulrox, but plenty of zircopax. As usual the Rx calls for the one I do not
have.

Sorry Barry, but your references are wrong. Ultrox is a tradename for
Zirconium Oxide, ZrO2. Zircopax and Opax are tradenames for Zirconium
Silicate, ZrSiO4 (ie, ZrO2.SiO2 in a crystalline structure that does not
melt at C10+). The oxide and the silicate do not behave the same in a
glaze slurry nor do they have equal opacifying effect/result on the fired
pot, when used in the same weight percent addition. Some years ago, there
was comment from a few potters that said Ultrox gave them a pain.
til later. Peace. Tom B.

Donald,
Zircopax, Ultrox , and Superpax are forms of Zirconium Oxide and can be used
interchangeably as an opacifier. In some cases, zirconium oxide can be used as a
substitute for tin oxide if the desired effect is a whitish glaze. Because
zirconium oxide is a weaker opacifier than tin oxide, a good rule of thumb is to
double the amount when substituting for tin oxide. The result won't be exactly as
if you used tin, but after testing, you may find it acceptable to you.
This substitution will not work in glazes where the addition of tin is for
it's interaction with other colorants in the glaze, (i.e. chrome tin pink).

Hope this helps.

Yes, they are just different brand names of the same chemical and I have used
one or the other.

Hello all,

from my own testing ( line blend),
Ultrox seems a little more refractory than Zircopax
