purchasing used kiln

Dear Clayarters

I have the chance to purchase a crusader 274-S kiln
It fires to cone 10
It has an extra blanket of insulation around the
bricks
The interior is 24X27
It has 4 shelves and several posts
It is 8 years old, but not used in the last 4 years
It was always fired to cone 04 and 06

the asking price is $850...

Two potential problems:

When I open the lid the hinge tends to pull at the
metal surrounding the kiln, however the hinge itself
is in good to excellent condition and is screwed
tightly and the metal around the kiln seems sound. It
just seems that the weight of the top causes a stress
on the hinged area

Two bricks on the uppermost layer are broken and
expose the coil to the eye from above.

Does this sound like a good deal or to much?....does
anyone have a crusader kiln? How do you like it? If
you were making an offer what would you suggest?

Any thoughts would be appreciated
Christine

Dear Chris,

I think it is a good kiln. I used two of them for ten years at the
university. As Frank said they have a lot of elements, but they are easy
to install.
If you get it, the 19 elements I have are for that model. Check
the manual. If all the elements are the same, -not distinguishing
between top, center and bottom as on some kilns, I will send you the
elements. They are in a bag and I don't think they have any tags
labeling them top, etc. I think Crusader elements are all the same. They
are of no value to us as our crusdaers purchased in 1978
left the school a decade ago. I somehow bough elements when we had extra
money (had to spend it). I am leaving for Italy for 3 weeks. I can send
them when I get back.
-if you get it. Check the manual about the elements first. You never
want to replace the wrong type.
