questions about shino

updated sat 24 jun 00

Hi. I have a question for those of you who are knowledgeable about
shino. Today while going though e-bay, I saw some shino bowls and
wondered about certain things. Here are urls to the pictures followed by
questions.

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=362130924

I noticed that for the shinos I use, they tend to blister when
overlapped with another glaze. Is it different for wood ash, or do you
think it is because of the kind of shino I use?

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=362155446

Any ideas on how he gets those grey spots?

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=362619462

More grey spots and patches. How do you get the shino to come out white
without the flashing? Can you just leave out the soda ash?

By the way, I refired Tom Coleman's B shino in a regular kiln and it came
out a very nice reddish orange. It looked nothing like the barf shino I
got previously when I fired it in a small test kiln. It must have cooled
too quickly. (This was not the shino I used when I overlapped glazes and
caused the blistering)

I get that look (grey spots) from spraying barbecue charcoal
ash (not a lot of options out here in the desert for ash)on
the shino. In his description he mentions ash on those
pots.

Hi Rob,
Have you seen the new Tom Colemn Book: WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS?
There are several shino recipes, one of which has those grey spots you are
looking for. If you cannot find the book let me know and I can send you
those recipes. Linda

It appears that the seller - dmcarts2u - is most likely also the
artist - D. Michael Coffee. =20

Why not drop him an email? Better yet - maybe he's got some knowledge
to share with us here on Clayart.

Chapatsu,

WOW, nice shinos and really different. I'd bid on them my self if I could
afford the shipping. No idea how he gets those effects but it's the first
time I've seen ash glaze over shino so maybe that has something to do with
it.

The sake cup and the first link are real winners.

Hi Linda, last month I tried to order this from Barnes and Noble as well
as Axner, but they didn't have the title listed. Do you have to order it
from Coleman directly?

Also, does anyone know where you can purchase Coleman's porcelain?

Thanks

Hi Rob,
If you haven't already looked, there are some nice posts about shinos in
the archives. Our mayor mel has written a good bit on them, and there
is much discussion on Japanese versus "American" shinos. Also, take a
look at Eric Wong's web site at http://clayation.virtualave.net . He
certainly has a way with shinos.
I am not an expert (yet!) on firing shinos, but I love firing them. To
get nice carbon trapping I throw small pieces of wood in the kiln during
body reduction (around ^012), and then again at the end of the firing.
(a trick I learned from our mel) To get gray spots, I will sometimes
sprinkle a little wood ash on the pot while the glaze is still wet,
resulting in subtle gray spots.

Hope this helps,
Lori L.
