Back in 1997, I planned and was leader of a ceramic tour of China.
The trip was very successful and the eighteen individuals who went
were pleased with what the tour encompassed. Some of the sites we
visited were Banpo, which is a Neolithic village; the Shaanxi
Provincial Museum in Xian, the life-size Terra Cotta Warriors at the
tomb of Qin Shi Huangdi; the Shanghai Museum of Art and History and
its collection of Han, Sui, Tang, Sung and Ming ceramics. Near
Shanghai, we visited Yixing which is famous for small unglazed
stoneware teapots and then traveled to the "Porcelain-maker of the
World" or the "Porcelain City", Jingdezhen. There was so much to see
between the ceramic experiences and the traditional tour sites that
the weeks flew by and it was time to go home.

Jean Silverman, editor of the Studio Potters Newsletter was a member
of the tour and wrote a series of articles about her reactions of the
trip. If you are interested in reading about her reactions and
experiences, her writings appeared in the Autumn 1997, Vol. 10, No.2,
and Spring 1998, Vol. 11, No. 1.

I am planning on another tour to China during July 2001 and we will
be visiting the places mentioned above and many other culturally rich
ceramic sites, as well as other traditional historical places.
Included would be a visit to the Great Wall, The Bund and The Old
Town in Shanghai, the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven in
Beijing to mention a few. The cities we will be touring will be
Shanghai, Suzhou, Yixing, Hangzhou, Jingdezhen, Guilin, Xian, and
Beijing, plus a River Cruise of the Yangtze and the famous Three
Gorges.

The cost of the tour is approximately $4,400 and will not be
finalized until the itinerary is confirmed. I am still working on
compiling all the various sites to visit. The final cost includes:
roundtrip air fare; all transportation via air, train, or bus within
China; first class accommodations in hotels; three meals a day;
entrance fees to all the museums and sites; all banquets and cultural
events; and two guides.

an itinerary as soon as it is finalized and further information.
