Sybille,
The reason your red clay pots look brown after glazing with a transparent
glaze is because most red clays turn a brown when fired. You need to add an
opacifier or some tin oxide to your glaze to avoid this. I would start with
adding 2 to 3 % of tin oxide to the glaze you use and see what amount is
needed to please you . If you use an opacifier like Zircon or opax you will
need to double the amount to get the same effect as you do with tin oxide
-Zinc oxide. There is a very good book on glazes with lots of recipes, you

(Grundlagen,Eigenschaften,Rezepte Anwendung) by Wolf E. Mathies.
Re scratchy bottoms. You need to buy a "rubbing stone", a small block of
silicon carbide which comes in white. You rub your clay bottoms with that
after the glaze firing. It takes very little effort and does the job. A
rubbing stone lasts for years.Your ceramic supplier should help you
there.Mia in hot ABQ
