If anyone has the chance to go to the "clearing" for the workshop with
mel, GO! I was at the clearing several years ago in the fall, what a
wonderful place.

This is one of the most beautiful scenic get
aways that I have ever experienced. The Clearing
is very excited to introduce primitive clay experiences
that will entail construction, firing and theory of working
within the natural boundaries of this facility.

if you are interested, contact me off list and I
will send you details, and a brochure.

One would have to fly to Green Bay, Wisconsin
and be picked up there. About an hours drive to
the Clearing would follow.

This is one of those experiences that goes well beyond
the normal. it is unbelievable.

Hello,

In addition to stating, that in my humble opinion
the Clearing has to be one of the coolest places
on this planet, I think I should say a word about
my role in it.... because I'm directly responsible for the
"and computer science" that mel slipped in his
description. Somebody should try to explain what
pit firing and computer science is doing together
at the Clearing.

Ummmmm.

For the last four years I have been working on projects
related to decorating clay. I have posted and shared
the project openly as it is evolving across several
disciplines. Let me say briefly that what I can do is
process an image into a series of machine movements to
accomplish certain decorating tasks. The tools attached
to the machine at this time include an incising tool, and
also a high precision liquid dispensing tool. So if
you want to think about it this way it is like a very large
industrial strength plotter that can work on some 32
square feel of (flat) clay surface. Yes, that may be geeky,
but the cool part is that custom images from paintings,
photographs, CAD and wonderful talented artists can be
put WITH clay.

Why uppers on WITH? Because this is not a cover it
over "printing" like process! Not decals, not stains - what
we are attempting to do is the Kurt Wild Process with the
labor about 90% removed. In fact, Kurt is involved in the
project and has been extremely helpful. It is his artwork
which I have been using for the initial tests. Thank you Kurt,
maybe we can get him to come also? I hope so!

I like, and am proud of what I am doing because it is one
honest way that I can think of, with labor and costs being what
they are, to fight back a little and also do something I think
is good. Let me give a very specific example of what I think
we can be doing: I have this lady acquaintance, Mahvash Mossaed,
who has clay and tiles in her blood, and she does the most
beautiful images I can imagine. (She is Iranian, lives in CA.,
was women artist of the year etc. featured on their calendar).
I will consider myself a success when I can build one of her
images and do some justice to it on our medium - on clay
slabs. Her images need size, my intention is to use multiple
15" by 18" inch stoneware slabs for this kind of work. I think
her work is timeless, and I think it fits/belongs on clay....

Not sure where things will be in the fall, but I will be most
open to sharing this project with interested parties. There will
also be a sailboat in Ellison Bay for people wanting to see our
limestone bluffs from the water. Did I say it was a beautiful
spot?

And I will consider myself honored to schlepp clay, dig pits,
or doing anything useful I can for mel.

most sincerely,

george koller
