Although I've been to Mata Ortiz three times I don't have information
relative to guides/tours/classes/etc. to pass on to people who have
written requesting such information from me. My guide for three trips
was Mike Williams, who is no longer available. I'm also in touch with
Michael Wisner so there is no need to send his name. I would appreciate
any of the aforementioned information. If you post the information on
Clayart please send a copy directly to me in case I should miss it
there. Thanks,
Kurt

A potter/teacher here in Phoenix, David Bradley, does tours to Mata Ortiz.
He has been conducting them for four years. The tour is offered as a class
through David's school, Paradise Valley Community College. He takes a group
down for a week every May and it's $500 for all expenses from Phoenix. I
have heard they are WELL worth the cost. You can contact David at this email-

davlbradly@cs.com

I want to go!!!!!!

Hi Kurt,
I live in Tucson,AZ and go down to Mata Ortiz quite often. I do weekend
tours which leave early Friday morning and return Sunday evenings. We stay
in the village of Mata Ortiz Friday and Saturday nights. A tour of the
prehistoric Casas Grandes Ruins and Museum is offered as an option on
Sunday. The $300.00 cost covers everything; room, board, travel guide,
translator etc.

I teach Indian Pottery and Indian History at Pima College and have studied
pottery with several families in Mata Ortiz. You can contact me via email or
at:

reply to kurt-you and i spoke at length on the phone about blackware about a
year ago. i wrote the article on Juan in CM in 97. I was just in mata ortiz,
and, if anyone is looking for trips there, in the fall there is a 10 day trip
planned, for about $1200, including everything, flight from la, going thru
demming or el paso. it is run through vanessa acosta, with, usually, her
and-or rose figueroa of the southwest museum in LA doing the translating.
since rose is a part time M.O. resident, the curator of juan's show, it's a
special kind of class. rose may be interested in renting out her very nice
house there. neither rose nor vanessa has email (!) but, you can contact me
@310-899-9310 and i'll give you their #'s, or, call vanessa at this # and
leave your number and tell her it came through me. 323-344-9064. juan will
be in LA at the sw museum july 22 weekend for demo, for those interested. if
you want to arrange for him or someone else to do a workshop, contact
vanessa. shelley
