Anyone have any ideas about a satiny (but not shiny) glaze that could be
used to cover stains (Mason, Cerdec, and various solo oxides) as close to
transparent as a non-clear glaze can be? One that will let colors come
through fairly clearly?

Gail,

To cover pictures painted in stains, I think you'll do best with a slightly
matte glaze. Glossy glazes tend to run and take your underglaze artwork with
them. Here's a ^6 oxidation recipe that I got from Clayart and altered to
fit my own materials. Chris, of Light One Candle Pottery, developed this
glaze. I haven't tried it over Mason stain paintings yet, but I think it
would be worth your experimentation. BTW, Mason stain painting is very
fragile and will do better if you spray on the top coat, rather than
dipping. You will want a very thin coat.

Sorry to have been in a fog when I requested this. I fire in gas reduction
to cone 9 or 10, but have a few cone 8 spots in the kilns. ---Gail

What cone and what atmosphere are you firing in?
