Tuckers Pottery Supplies on wed 31 may 00

For those of you that haven't heard yet, Clayart's favourite teller of
tales, weaver of words, stoker of fires......is giving a workshop at The
Mudd Factory.

It promises to be a wonderful weekend as Tony Clennell not only shares tips
learned from a lifetime of throwing, but also secrets of marketing pottery
and making a living as a craftsperson. He'll be demonstrating, showing
slides, telling lies, and helping people figure out how to make pots that
reflect the maker.

The workshop is June 10th from 1 to 5pm and June 11th from 10am to 4pm.
It's just $85.00 Canadian dollars (just pennies for y'all south of the
border) and will include lunch on Sunday and snacks for the coffee breaks
on both days.

To find out more info or to sign up, simply contact Tucker's Pottery
Supplies at:
tuckers@passport.ca
or 1-800-304-6185.

Micheal wrote that I was a teller of lies. It ain't true. Just ask me if
I tell lies. the answer is no. Now does that sound like a lie???
The workshop will focus on sectional throwing. We make almost everything
in sections. Jugs, casseroles, teapots, plates, bottles, vases etc. I am
also going to demonstrate a baller for opening large amounts of clay and a
device my neighnbour invented for centering large amounts of clay
effortlessly. It is really a wheelbarrow handle with a paddle on it that
uses leverage to your advantage.
My primary focus will be on making pots that reflect the maker. Casual,
uptight, meticulous, mean, friendly, etc, etc.- The pot is the maker- no
disquise is possible- Benard Leach.
If you are from out of town email me for things to do. We have the Chinese
collection at the ROM in Toronto- fabulous. The Burlington Arts Center-
Leach, Cardew, Shaner, Ferguson to name a few.
The Clennell family have been flogging pots in Ontario since 1947- I am
bound to have a few lies to tell.
cheers,
tony

A few hours ago I returned from a TERRIFIC workshop with Tony and Sheila
Clennell. What an awesome, talented couple! The way they interact and wor=
k
together is a pleasure to observe. They both demonstrated at the same tim=
e
for this two day workshop, and showed us a myriad of techniques and
"tricks." I loved watching Tony make a texas Size "sugar jar and jug"
(that's a creamer to us.) He guaranteed we would go home able to make a p=
ot
at least twice as big as before. Hmmm. I will have to try that one... he
didn't mention that this was a money back guarantee!! Sheila's fluted cup=
s
are adorable. All in all, this was one really good weekend!

The workshop was held at the Creative Oasis, (which was a new place for m=
e
to visit) in State College, Pennsylvania, USA. The facility is huge -- I
think they said they have 6000 square feet of space. There is a retail
area, lots of wheels, tables, shelving, etc. They rent space out by the
month so people can go in and work on their own. I would suggest everyone
check out their workshop schedule. The location is great, really close to
the Days Inn, with MANY really good restaurants to eat nearby.

There were lots of ClayArters there! It was so good to see everyone -
really fun to be with our own special clay family. Wish it could have
lasted longer!!

I have to second Jean, the workshop was wonderful and a part of that was
having so many clayart people there as well. One big happy family. I
think all but two attendees were from clayart. We've been spoiled
however, I'm always going to want two great potters doing a two ring
circus performance at every workshop from now on!

My drive from NJ was a bit longer than Jean's but not bad, I'd consider
taking other workshops there. Nice facility and a wonderful town to be
in. The owners would love some feedback from people who they want to see
present workshops. So if there are specific people you've been wanting
to see please let them know. They're trying to get the word out about
their upcoming workshops as well.

I think for me however, the most important thing I learned, was that both
Tony and Sheila really really really like making whoopee . Maybe I
should let one of them explain that to the rest of y'all.

And to answer Tony's question, "Why didn't someone tell me my fly was
undone?" Just thought it was part of the show

Ilene: so sorry! The bureaucracy of the Appalachian center has to learn it
is dealing with an even bigger beaucracy the US Immigration. We spent 3
hours in a horrible room with miserable uniformed men with guns and ugly
dispositions. I pleaded with supervisors to make this work. We were denied
entry, passports confiscated and asked to drive across traffic to lane #6
where they would be returned to us after i once again paid the $3.50 toll
fee and then had to present the denied entry form to Canada Customs to be
hauled in to be grilled once again why we had been denied entry.
I had told the Appalachian Center that it is alot easier for us to cross the
border and say we are going on a workshop/holiday.they insisted I had to get
B-1 status, fill out a IRS W-7 form and get the guard to give me a I-94.
Tell the truth. Never again!!!!
We taught a workshop for Chuck at Creative Oasis in Pennslyvania last year
and it was snack time. A 2 day holiday in Pennsylvania and our wallets were
a tiny bite bigger on return.
For this i have been on the phone a month ago with the US Embassy at $2 US
per minute making sure all documents were in order, countless e-mails, had
to get a passport $85 each(which is not required for US/Canada crossings),
faxes, phone calls, letters, 21 page form download from the computer, our
pots and supplies are in TN.
We were so looking forward to meeting y'all and really spent the last week
planning and anticipating.
I asked David to take over my column in CT for awhile and now this. So nice
to have a good friend in what seems right now a foreign land. Saturday night
I'll be really low as David had made reservations for us at The Bluebird
Cafe in Nashville where Guy Clark,Townes Van Zandt and Steve Earle have
played. My 3 alltime favs. 4 really-
David is a gem.
I have Helmer in the studio so I'll try to make some pots tomorrow. Gonna
fire the train this coming week just because I need to work hard. Work will
stop me thinkin'.
thanks for all your kind notes.
Wondering if Larry had anything to do with this??????
cheers,
tony

The first problem here is the idiotic government policies (multiple governments)
that make it hard for anyone to cross a border to "teach" in a workshop.

The second problem in this case was the insistence on the part of the Appalachian
Center (bureaucracy again) in requiring Tony and Sheila to do all of the paper work
the "right" way.

Unfortunately no one wins in this case, not Tony and Sheila, not the people that
signed up to attend based on the expectation of Tony and Sheila presenting, and NOT
the Appalachian Center, they need to pay as well for causing the mess in the first
place. If not monetarily, than with their reputation. Everybody pays, everybody
loses. what a great system.

But if ye have endless lines of big Tractor Trailer rigs, with bad brakes

Why should they?

Earl -
Huh? "They need to pay as well for causing this mess in the first place."
Excuse me? Who caused this mess? We just tried to do things LEGALLY, which
did seem the right thing to do. We have had Canadian presenters in the
past, and to my knowledge there has never been a problem. It has always been
up to the presenter to arrange the necessary paperwork, and if they needed
documentation from us we always provided it. This is an entirely new
dynamic, and it is very much an outcome of 9/11. I can understand a certain
amount of caution in immigration practices when there are full-time jobs at
stake, but bringing in an expert artist to do a workshop or presentation
should certainly be immune from such restrictions. It is part of a healthy
cultural exchange, and everyone benefits. But I am going off topic, because
I know you agree with that.

But regarding damage to our reputation, that is bullshit. We have worked
extremely hard to build our reputation, and we will continue to do so.
These things happen, and no one is to blame except those ASSHOLES in the
INS, with their irrational, paranoid Gestapo practices.
Best wishes -

Ahhh, the Vince that we have all grown to know and love!!!
Glad to see you back to your normal self!!
No harm intended to the Craft Center, was just saying that everybody gets hurt,
and included you guys as participants. These kind of things affect everyone
involved, whether it's there fault or not. It was your workshop, and some people
suggested that the wrong form was what caused the problem. I am SURE that no one
is happy about what has happened.

Hi:

I am normally a lurker but have come out of my box to give thanks to =
Tony and Sheila Clennell for an amazing workshop they gave in Thunder =
Bay, Ontario this past weekend to members of the Thunder Bay Potters' =
Guild and Lakehead University students.

Sheila and Tony do different things but/and they complement each other =
and our heads were moving from one side to the other to take in all the =
action. Their generosity of spirit and presentation and teaching skills =
were great. The weekend was capped off by a cane handle demo by Sheila =
and then all of us trying it out on a small pot they gave each of us. =
Then we tried making handles on our own pots. I am glad I bought =
Sheila's video. I am a slow learner at these things and it will be nice =
to have the video to review.=20

Anyone who has an opportunity to attend a workshop given by the =
Clennells is in for a treat.=20

Thanks also to Tony and Sheila for braving the - 40 deg temperatures =
(deg F and deg C are the same at - 40). No kidding that is minus 40.

It was - 44 deg on my thermometer this am. There is ice fog on the lake.

Thanks
