Hi all,

I've been busy with my work and had not read the posts for so long. But I
sensed something unfortunate and unpleasantly happened while I was away.

I don't know the history of the current problem. But I have been always
conscious of the difficulties of communicating through emails
because English is not my mother tongue.
So I try to sleep on it before actually posting the mail and
examine it if it is a frivolous comment or not,
if someone would benefit from my comment, or if my comment might hurt
someone's feeling unnecessarily. After one night sleep, I have better
perspective usually and either delete the mail or edit it so that it is
better
presented. Even though I do that I found so many mistakes in my post
and am so ashamed afterwards. Oh well.

One observation: I belong to a few Japanese Mailing lists. I found this
phenomenon very interesting.
Although the Japanese members write in extreme polite form of the Japanese
language called Keigo, they seemed still worried about offending someone.
So they put picture of their face after each sentence or paragraphs to make
sure the readers would not misunderstand their intentions.
There are so many face versions to list but you might enjoy some of face
examples below. I put my interpretation of the faces.

(^_^) I agree with you wholeheartedly

m(__)m I thank you very much or I apologize.

<(_"_)> I humbly admit my mistake and please accept my apology.

(^^) I am so embarrassed

(^^;) I regret very much. I am crying or sweating

\(^o^)/ I am so pleased or happy or Banzai.

(^O^) Whatever impression you think this face might give you.

(^_-) I am just kidding.

There many many more face simbols they use.

In english we call these "emoticons" and they are useful. I find it very
amusing that in the west our text runs horizontally but our emoticons are on
their sides. In Japan, your script runs vertically but your emoticons are
upright!

:-) Smile
;-) joke
:-o Oh!
=-0 Extreme Shock
*<:o) Clown
%-) Crazy
_0-) Happy frogman (scuba diver)

There are some sites where you can get whole lists of these.

Russel (loved your teabowl story)
