The subject of "Volcanic ash"
popped up on the list, a while back I formulated a group of glazes with
volcanic ash.

I realized few things when using Volcanic ash.
One was that it has a large mesh size, if I didn't ball mill the glaze I
could just leave out the Volcanic ash, and add the material after the wet
screening. (Some have prepared wood ash glazes this way)
Volcanic ash likes to settle in the bucket, so a little Epsom salts or
Calcium chloride will help keep it up.

Also I have found that at mid-range Oxidation Volcanic ash will sometimes
work as a replacement in a glaze that calls for Cornwall stone, although you
will always need to consider the Iron Oxide content of the volcanic ash, the
Iron will contribute a trace of color to the glaze.

Hi Frank,
Great to have recipes for Volcanic ash. Thanks so much for posting
them. Apart from your suggestion that Cornwall Stone could be replaced by
Volcanic ash in mid-range glazes, do you have any recipes you would not
mind sharing for mid-range oxidation.
Thanks in advance, and I hope all is well with you and Polly Anne.
All the best.

Dear Frank

Has the formula for the FM volcanic celadon been altered to a lower
temp.? In the title does the c12-3/7 indicate that this formula was
originally a cone 12 glaze? If so would you please reply to me to verify.I
fire to cone 12-13 in a wood kiln and would like to use this formula.
Sincerely,Donald Burroughs

Dear Donald

The FM volcanic celadon hasn't been altered to a lower
temperature.
The C12-3/7 refers to Celadon test #12 that was
part of a 30-70 line blend.

This should work fine in the wood kiln.
When I was firing it last at cone 11 touching in a gas kiln.
And it was also fired in the wood/salt kiln at Peters Valley,
and it worked fine.

C12-3/7 is a very shiny celadon that almost looks like cross between
V and O celadon, and Sander's celadon.
