The method of wax resist I use is an inlay technique.

Try dipping the piece first in the design dominant glaze. Let that dry then
wax the whole piece. After the wax has dried use a scrafitto tool and incise
and scrape away the wax and underlying glaze in the pattern of your desired
design then dip again or brush the next glaze onto the areas now scratched
away. You could repeat this process waxing the areas that you scratched and
glazed to mask them again and add another layer of design or another color
of glaze, scratching through the wax and removing the underlying glaze and
inlaying the next. This has suited my purposes and you can change the glaze
recipie to suit this method of decoration. You need a glaze that handles
well before going in the kiln and won't peel off in clumps when you scratch
through the wax. Having clay as an ingrediant in your glaze helps in this
prefire durability (if not in your reicipie already you can add 2% ball or
any small particle clay without affecting the glaze dramatically- test first
though).

Good Luck and let me know if this works out for you!
