Quite a while ago, I built a kiln from a description in Ceramics MOnthly.
It was a ceramic fiber down draft of about 12 cubic feet. It was a great
kiln, except the door was a separate unit and it got to be too much to
handle. I sold it and bought a Berman Kiln. It is IFB updraft\downdraft. It
is also 12 cubic feet of firing space. Harry Berman doesn't manufacture
kilns anymore, but Geil Kilns makes a similar set up. It is only
downdraft. I like having the up draft option, but it is not essential. The
burners fire from directly beneath the kiln, not via the sides; it is easy
to move to a new location, highly fuel efficient and gives even firings
with good reduction. It is easy to control.Thr Geil is reported to have a
hot spot in its center. They have a good reputation and stand behind their
product.

Good luck and use your welder's goggles!!!!

Hi Mary Lou:
Last year I had a high fire reduction gas kiln (a car kiln) built by Donovan
Palmquist of Minneapolis, and am very pleased with it. Because of logistical
problems it was very helpful for me to have the kiln built on my site rather
than buying a ready made kiln of which there are several good ones being
offerred currently. (Bailey for example.)
Donovan calls his company "Master Kiln Builders" and can be reached at 2858
Arthur Street, N.E., Minneapolis, MN 55418.
Hope this helps.
