When I was just starting as a potter some 25 years ago, the BEST potter in
our area of PA was Jonathan Kaplan. He was throwing handmade (by anyone's
definition) pots that were fabulous. Like many potters, he just couldn't
make enough in one 24 hour period. His clay was running his life around the
clock. He began to look for ways to make more, within the time one has. And
he began to burn out. He took some years off, away from the demands of a
self-supporting potter, but fortunately didn't get rid of his equipment.
When he returned to the clay world, he figured another way to produce
exciting work. Jonathan is still a fine, fine thrower. He is not one of
those potters who throws one nice pot out of a lot of mediocre pots and
makes a mold of that pot. He is very talented, and I admire him for finding
another way to produce his work.
