potter's house and studio for sale - testing the waters

updated sat 13 may 00

Helen Bates on wed 10 may 00

I have a potter acquaintance who is 'retiring' from the business and who
wishes to put her home and studio up for sale. What is the feeling here
as far as my helping her a bit by posting the details on this list? The
property is in Eastern Ontario, Canada.

Any ideas where else I might suggest she look for prospective
purchasers?

Thanks,

Helen

Hi, Helen.

I've seen lots of listings of this sort on Clayart, and have never heard any
objections. At any rate, the moderators passed them, which seems to be at
least tacit permission. Beyond that, I've also seen such listings in the
classified sections of clay trade journals. You might also suggest The
Mother Earth News and other alternative lifestyle magazines to your friend.

One piece of advice I can pass on, having been a Town and Country Planner
for 40 years and a potter for about the last 20, is not too cling to the
idea that YOUR house and POTTERY should continue when you move on or retire.

Potteries attached to a house are ephemeral and personal. If you insist on
the new owner keeping the use which was so important to you, then you
restrict your sale. If the property is in an area where commercial uses are
acceptable, then make sure you have all the necessary range of permissions.
Widen your sale opportunities; do not restrict them.

Reuse of the pottery and house as a pottery and house again, is just one
possibility amongst many.

Cindy Strand and Martin Webb make good points both about where else to
try advertising a potter's home and studio for sale and about keeping
emotions out of the situation when trying to sell a property. It's not
my property, of course, and I have ruled out purchasing it myself. I'm
a bit too old for the "out of the way" type of property, I feel, and
have been through all that (though not as a potter) before.
Anyway, thanks for all answers, public and private. I am passing them
on to my friend, who, I hope, will appreciate them for the good ideas
they contain. I certainly hope (and think) she is able to keep her
options open, and not feel only a "potter" should follow her in her
place, (especially as she is, unhappily, "burnt out" as a potter, and
doing other things now, to make a living.)

Thanks again,

Helen
