I am submitting the following question
for a friend who cannot be on Clayart
right now.
I'll forward your answers to her.
Thanks

Since gertsley borate is no longer available,
Laguna is substituting with "Laguna borate".
They say it works fine in all their glaze recipes.
I'm wondering if most folks have
A)made the switch?
B) had good luck with it?
I'm wondering if I need to test it in all my
recipes before I go making large batches of glaze.

Yes - TEST TEST TEST!!! I went to Kickwheel & picked up my free sample of
Murray's Borate, which they are working on as a gerstley substitute.
Christine showed me a sample rakued piece with three glazes on it, all the
same recipe except for the borate material. One used colemanite, one
gerstley, and one their new Murray's borate, which she described as a frit.
The colemanite version of the "clear crackle" was smoky, and appeared to be
locally reduced. The gerstley and the Murray's were crystal clear. The clay
body used was Lizella, a native Georgia red clay.

I have not yet had an opportunity to finish my test pieces. I'm looking
forward to testing the infamous Floating Blue. Christine may have completed
her tests with this by now - she was still working on it when I was there.

So - your mileage will vary. Christine posted a few weeks back about free
samples of this new product - you pay the shipping & handling (or drop by).

Try replacing Gerstley Borate and Colemanite with Ferro Frit 4112
I don't know where you would get it. It has been suggested to our Ceramic
Study Group of Western Australia by Mike Kusnik, retired ceramic chemist, in
his "Armchair Potting" segment in our newsletter
