Anyone using pre 2000/2001 guidebooks and planning a visit to London, may =
like
to take note:

The Gilbert Collection (the gift of Sir Arthur Gilbert) opens to the public =
from
May 26th. This is a major new museum in the South Building of Somerset House=
in
The Strand, London. Three separate collections: English and Continental =
Silver,
European gold snuff boxes (inc. 25 porcelain snuff boxes) and =
post-Renaissance
Italian mosaics and micromosaics, including three rare neo-classical vases
dating from 1795-1800 (probably made in the Vatican Mosaic Workshop).

A resident of California, born in England 1913, Sir Arthur began buying =
objets
d'art in the 1960s and his collection is one of the most distinguished in =
the
world. When he heard of the plans for Somerset House including turning the =
great
court into a concert area, he chose the place as a home for his bequest. Sir
Arthur is also a founder of the Los Angeles Music Center and a =
philanthropist in
the arts, education and humanitarian causes.

Of further interest to ceramists, the collection also includes an example of
China Closet - specially designed rooms which originated in Holland in the =
17th
century and installed in royal palaces all over Europe, to display silver or
gilt-bronze mounted oriental porcelain.
