cone tip

Francoise Melville had a suggestion for dealing with junior Orton cones
breaking rather than bending in the sitter (posted below). I have had quite
a bit of trouble with the same problem over the last few years too.
Different people at Orton have suggested several things, the one that I
find helps the most is to hold the cone on both ends using the thumb and
index finger and give a gentle tug. It is surprising just how many break,
up to 20%. If I had a seconds rate like that, I'd be out of business. It
isn't the Olympic Francoise mentions or a particular kiln sitter, I have
had this happen in 6 different Skutts, ranging in age from almost new to 15
years old. I use c6 & 7 junior for glaze, but also have had trouble with
c08, 07, 06. I have tried different batch numbers, placing the cone in the
sitter with the flat side up, replacing the rods in the kiln sitters, kiln
wash on the sitter parts and adding more ventilation without affecting the
problem. I think it is mechanical damage to the cones during shipping.
