OK, It's my turn to ask for a glaze recipe. Last summer one of our
workshops presenters had us mix up a bucket of Somebrite Green - cone 10 -
nice mottled bright green glaze. I was gone at the time, and now the recipe
does not seem to be around anywhere. My students love the glaze, and the
bucket ran out quite a while ago. If one of you has it I and my students
would greatly appreciate it if you would share it with us.
Best wishes -
- Vince

Vince,
Josh De Weese at thye Archie Bray had that glaze recipe in his workshop
hand out. I don't know if I have it, but I'm sure hem would have it handy.

Hi Vince,

Funny thing, I was just sorting through cone-10 glaze recipes this afternoon and
had ear-marked Somebright Green as a test for our next wood firing. I found it
in McKenzie Smith's Favorite Glaze Recipes in the Nov/Dec 99 Clay Times.

Somebright Green---Cone 10

Custer Feldspar 45
Whiting 7
Zinc Oxide 10
Strontium Carb. 25
Ball Clay 13
Total Base 100

Add:
Copper Carb 5
Rutile 1
RIO 1.25

Glad to hear this is a great glaze. I'm looking forward to trying it.

Linda Riggs

Hi Vince and other green glaze enthusiasts:

I looked at the seger formula of this glaze. OK, stop wincing! It's below
limits in silica for a cone 6 glaze and mega dismal in terms of cone
10. The alumina is way low too. With the 5% copper carb, which will
increase the solubility even more, this would be a poor choice for
functional pots. Sorry, don't mean to throw a wrench in the gears.

Thanks Donald. Several people already sent it to me, with only MINOR
variations between the different versions - mostly in the oxide amounts. We
are trying several of them.

Hello Vince, Linda and others interested in this glaze,

This glaze is very low on silica (1.45 by my calculation in HyperGlaze).
With this much copper in it, and with what I now know about leaching, I
would bet this leaches a LOT. Like maybe 30-50 mg/l of copper--maybe
even more. It might not even pass a 3 day vinegar test without a
noticeable change in surface sheen if not color. My caveat in all this
is that I have no data on high strontium and/or zinc glazes yet--maybe
strontium or zinc magically help the leaching. How about having it
tested if you plan to use it and letting us know the results? I'd love
to be proved wrong about its leaching. I'll buy you your choice of
beverage at a watering hole in Charlotte next March if it leaches less
than 10 mg/l.

Just to confirm what others have said about this glaze - it is short
of silica and high copper - even when the zinc reduced out.

I would not be surprised if there was color change when in contact
with certain foods under some conditions.

The calculated expansion is very high as well so I predict it will
craze over most bodies.

This glaze is a prime candidate for additions of silica and alumina
to lower expansion and make it more durable. I may even be possible
to have it look the same and substantially improve fit and resistance
to both acid and alkaline attack.

If anyone is interested I'm willing to work with them to do some experiments.

Dear Ron,

It's very kind of you to offer to make this glaze "work". I, for one,
am very interested, having wished for a bright green for years. My
present green is that 70's kind of olive and could never be called
bright.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Hi , Ron. Like others, I'll be very interested in anything you come up
with in this glaze (which I've never used). Could certainly test it and
send you samples, if you like. So nice of you to offer.
