load of shino

I just opened the last load of shinos.......the ones with Mel's recipe
plus Pinnell's Red......next load will also have the orange added to the
shino and red. That red is terrific. Doesn't run even when the cones
went WELL beyond 11. Cone 9 was melted...not just flat......melted! I
couldn't figure out where those brown, shiny blobs of glaze had come
from......didn't even know that could happen. The stuff they don't
include in books! A potter's life is so exciting....too exciting. AND I
guess I didn't reduce early enough because I didn't have nearly the
black I had in the prior load. BUT I'd stuck in a large wall plate I
rescued from the UglyPotSpot and decided to re-fire....bright cobalt
with little ilmenite crusty globs on it.....this plate liked the high
heat. I'd added some of the red which became thin, swirly lines and
looked great, and the ilmenite melted into ashy flowery looking flat
pools. Not beautiful nor elegant, but definitely interesting...artsy. My
