To answer Paul Taylor and others who are wondering how it is done

Use either Indian ink or a diluted to flowing consistency black acrylic =
paint.
Paint all over the surface which has to exhibit the crackle. Allow the =
liquid to
soak in, presumably by capillary activity then wash with clean water. =
Delicate
effects can be had if the ink is slightly diluted.

I can understand the Cess Pit. Somehow or other, iron in faeces becomes =
reduced
by sulphur, presumably from sulphite pulp paper, to give a dense black
precipitate.

Ivor. Who has the weekly task of recycling all that water.
