Hi All!

I'm currently delving into building a website (who knew that on top of
clay skills, engineering skills, chemistry skills etc. I'd have to be
profecient in computer/internet skills when I decided to be a potter?),
and found this site on the web that lists free/cheap hosts and sites for
building web sites:

One of my students told me about it, and its been very useful, so I
wanted to pass it on. I'd also love to hear from others who are
currently working on web sites.

Dear Jon,
I realize you mean to be helpful - but,
Free web site - really!
When is the last time you got something for free ?
Most of the free sites I've seen require some form of advertising or
promotion that you have no control over.
So you may say "Well that isn't so bad".
Two things to think about -
A) After struggled to bring prospects to your free page you will find
typically plus or minus 20% of the area on your page is pushing some product
or products at your visitors that you have no control over.
B) banner add also increases the down load time - this decreases the number
of visitors willing to wait to see your work.

And also realize that for an artist a web site is becoming an important
presentation vehicle. Ideally this should be aesthetically pleasing, easy to
navigate and professional looking.

Having said all that it still may be a valuable learning experience. Just
don't get discourage after hordes of visitors fail to find your free site.
There is a whole lot more to the internet than "A Web Page". Like good
photography, building web sites and networks is a "craft" in its own right.

Hi Tyler,

Thanks for the heads up, but please note that I said free/cheap
sites....this website also lists sites that you do indeed pay for (and
hence, no banner ads) but might be more affordable to those of us on a
shoestring budget.

I am in the strange position of having to put up a website for one very
specific purpose, and it needs to be done rather in a hurry, as I leave
in a few weeks to go teach for a month in Colorado. I am not putting up
this website to attract "hordes of visitors" nor do I have time to learn
a whole lot about the craft of designing web pages.

Reading through what some domain hosts offer and don't offer was indeed
incredibly helpful. My plan is to get something simple and direct up
before I leave, and upon my return refine it and decide on a permanent,
affordable host site.

Cheers!
