The North Carolina Pottery Center will sponsor potters Will Ruggles and
Douglass Rankin for a three-week (May 8 -28, 2000) workshop in kiln
building and pottery making. To build a kiln is simple. It is a matter
of laying one brick on another with precision, forethought, and
purpose. Participants will work in small crews, simultaneously building
the kiln and making pots to fill it. Theory and practice of kiln
building, wood-firing, and the making of raw-glazed utilitarian wares
will be covered. The workshop will culminate in firing the newly build
two-chamber wood kiln, and then discussing the finished pots. This will
indeed be a full three weeks. Class size is limited to ten
participants. Cost of the three week workshop is $350.00. Clay and
glazes will be furnished by the Pottery Center. NC Pottery Center, PO
Box 531, Seagrove, NC 27341. (336) 873-8430.
