plasticine sprigs?

Hi,
Does anyone, familiar with working with sprigs for relief decoration,
know about making them with plasticine or some such thing so that it is
softer for direct application?

Also, I am wanting to make glazes brushable and was wondering what
people's experience is with adding CMC or Veegum T or a combination of
both or sodium silicate or whatever else to glaze.

Thanks,
Centa

Dear Centa.

I know of good ways to make sprigs but from your Question I am not sure
what you mean.

A sprig is usually a flat decorated slab of clay press molded from a strong
plaster mold. They can be large architectural slabs or the most delicate
cameos.

I make mine by scraping out the shape directly in the plaster I have
some steel fettaling tools. But you can use all sots of scrapers. Old
dentists tools are a solution customized on a grinder.
Do not forget the mold will be in mirror image that makes writing a bit
strange.

You can check the mold with a piece of clay as you go along. Do not let any
plaster lumps get into your clay -that will give you grief . Throw the clay
you use to prepare molds away or give it to kids ( if it is red clay - not
to my kids ).

After you have pushed the clay into the mold use a phone card to flatten
the back of the sprig, it does less damage than a metal kidney.

The real trick is getting the sprig out of the mold. You do this by
taking a piece of clay and pressing it onto the sprig and pulling it away.
It will eventually pull the sprig out. You will get the idea ,and better,
with practice.

Larger sprigs or very three dimensional sprigs you will have to make a
positive and pour strong plaster over it - remember no undercuts.

Paint on glazes. All know is that they cost a fortune and I would like to
know if they are any different to dipping glazes but the ones I saw div have
a strange feel to them.
