LOOKING FOR LOCAL CERAMISTS WITH WOODBURNING KILNS

Hi all,
This is my first post since college a few years ago. I currently work as an
illustrator for The San Bernardino County Sun newspaper. I get to do my art
and make a living at it so I guess I can't complain. But I'd rather be at my
kiln (not yet built) burning my eyebrows. I apprenticed to a ceramist in
Japan for a year and can't seem to get the smoke out of my blood.

Anyway... sorry to ramble. My art director at work asked for ideas for
informational graphics for the paper. I figured it would be fun to do a
piece on *wood-firing* ceramists and their kilns. However, for the paper to
deem it worthy of publication, the kilns would need to be located in San
Bernardino County. I'd love to do the piece, and it would be good P.R. for
the art. I'm not the decision maker, but if I can find a few people, there's
a good chance they'll do a story. If there is anyone local who would like to
have their work and woodburning kiln showcased, please email me at
csgrafix@excite.com.

Thank you so much,
Shaun Ellsworth

Shaun,

Having lived in the San Bernardino area, and knowing the smog problem
there, I would hazard a guess that the wood burners that are in that area,
if in fact there be any, would not care for the publicity. I know I would
not want that information in your paper if I were firing with wood. No
matter how clean burning my kiln. Even among the folks here on this list,
it was demonstrated a short time ago, there are people that would close
down all wood fired kilns.

Hi Everybody!

I disagree with the above statement. I think Shaun was looking for a
wood-fired kiln in the entire county, not just within the city limits of San
Bernardino. Since this county is the largest county (in area) in the 48
contiguous USA states, that's a lot of territory. Most of San Bernardino
County is not as smoke and pollution-sensitive as the area adjacent to
Riverside and Los Angeles Counties, which is where the city of San Bernardino
is located.

I know of a potter who has a wood-burning kiln in Apple Valley, which I
suggested Shaun check out. I'm sure other wood-firing potters will come out
of the "woodwork," too!
