Unfortunately I must leave CLAYART March 2 or so. Therefore I am in
relative hurry to hear from you all.
Sorry.

What do you know about the results of, what has been your experience with
BONE FUSION OF THE CMC JOINT. (I also could not believe the name, but it is
the carpal something or other.) To those who have been there done that,
the joint needs no identification. For the rest of you, it is the joint
just BELOW your thumb, the big bump where your wrist meets your hand,
about an inch and a half above you wristwatch band, or where your jacket
sleeves end.

My CMC joints are very painful, the right so dilocated the thumb is numb
because the nerve is getting squooshed. This proposed surgery, which a
potter friend had (she is very happy with the results) FUSES the joint.
It is not a joint replacement.

Anything you know or hear would help in decision making. Negative results
as meaningful as positive. Or: How will this affect throwing?
Handle pulling?

By the way: the MD said CMC problems are often found in the same people
who have carpal tunnel problems. C'est la vie!

I will still be on regular e-mail till 3/25. And snailmail
address now is PO Box 250, Isle of Palms, SC 29451. As of 3/28 it is
back to PO Box #1, Constableville NY 13325. I would be VERY GRATEFUL
if you keep the latter address just in case "something comes up" over the
Summer. I would have this surgery only in late Fall 2000.

many thanks in advance

Lili

I have had Carpal Tunnel surgery. It was done by a neurosurgeon rather
than an orthopedic surgeon. It was a while (+9 months) in healing, but
did not require fusion of a joint. The CM joint is a carpometacarpal
joint. I don't know if there is nerve involvement that can be repaired
by a neurosurgeon but it would be worth asking the question.
