Hi All - NEED HELP =21=21=21
I have fired my new wood-fired kiln 3 times. The wares I threw for the =
first
two firings were made from clay that had been reclaimed by one of my friends=
and
turned out beautifully. As I do not want to go to the well too often I =
started
using some of my Laguna WSO. WRONG =21=21=21

Where the wares were glazed they were great - where there was no glaze - no
color - plain white. Does anyone out there relate to this problem and can =
you
give me a suggestion other than dumping my WSO because I have quite a stock =
on
hand.. I also use it for Raku.

TIA for any suggestins and/or solutions.

Les, use some flashing slips over the clay, it should be fine. Glaze
the insides as usual.

You could make up a saturated solution of soda ash and dip the bottom (unglazed)
part of your pots in it before firing. When I do this I get a nice orange flash
the bottoms of my porcelain pots. You will net to place the pots on wads though
check the archives for recent posting on both the soda ash and the wads.

Hi Les

I've always had good luck with wso in wood, but I think the few pieces I put
in your first firing had shino on them.

Why don't you try a helmer slip on it, helmer kaolin and neph sy? I have
some Helmer If you want to pick it up and try it next time your in town.

There was also a thread back in November about achieving fake flashing by
brushing soda ash (saturated in hot water) directly onto the bare clay.

If you try that let me see how it turns out.

Dear Les; Why don't you try applying over your pieces another clay which is
more receptive to the ash? A slip made from one of the high titania kaolins
will give good results, especially if it is "wetted" with around 20-30%
NephSye. Try Avery, Helmar, #6 tile, and my favorite, McNamee. The usual
pour, dip,and spray routine will give good results. Your mileage may vary.

depends where you are

If on the west coast Georgies Clay in Portland has Helmets and you can order
it through the Archie Bray Centre in Montana, check the archives for other
sources this is a recurring question but I don't know all the sources,

Avery is no longer mined from what I understand.

Helmar kaolin is available from
Wendt Pottery
2729 Clearwater Ave.
Lewiston, ID 83501

Michael Wendt mines and processes and bags this clay and sells it to
many resellers, as well as direct. If you check with your current supplier
they may have it.
