Does anyone use or have tried plastic bats that have a waffled back side. I=
saw
them in the Axner catalogue.
Last time I was in New York, I took home a dozen of the =22plasti-bats=22. =
They are
drilled =22universal=22, and fit
my Brent fine. Sometimes the oval hole needs some stuffing. I am wondering=
if
the waffelled ones fit very
snuggly. I also thought that they might be more of a pain, because the
waffelling might fill up with clay. I am
satified with the ones I have, but I am wondering about this other type.

we use this type of bat, it has two sets of pin holes to accommodate
different wheelheads, with one of the holes on each set being a bit larger
to make it easier to slide on to the pins. I like the bats a lot as the
plastic surface is not a shiny one, has a bit of texture for the clay to
stick to, and no, clay doesn't fill up the waffled areas on the back.

Alisa,

I think you are talking about Creative Industries bats. I have a
number of these, and they generally work fine and stay reasonably
tight on the bat pins. The waffled back does make them harder to
clean (I mostly don't bother). I have noticed some tendency for
them to be warped slightly (I think they came this way), which can
cause problems. They also can get clay in the holes which can
have the same effect, making the bat slightly off level.

All in all, I love my Medex bats best. Wish I could get some more
of those....

Alisa, I use both types of plastic bats. The ones with the wafffle pattern
are not very stiff and i find that they flex when being lifted off the
wheel.. If the piece is very large this can cause warping. I have never had
the bat pin holes get loose, but, i have heard for a them breaking. The
waffle one come in a 7 inche square (which will fit a brent wheel).. the are
stiff, and very usuable...if you keep your fingers and knuckles out of the
way..

Alisa,
I don't have an Axner catalogue, so don't know exactly which ones they are
selling. However, I have used the small, square ones made by Creative
Industries for years. I have been very pleased with them. No problem with
clay collecting on the back side. They don't warp. How tight they fit on
the bat pins is a function of the actual diameter of the head of the pin (the
pin is usually a standard hardware item and varies according to manufacturer
and cost).

Hi Alisa,
Yes, I use these bats. They too have a larger oval at one end and a
circle at the other. They fit very well in the beginning and then get a bit
worn, but I am pretty happy with them. I prefer them to the flat bats,
because the entire throwing surface has no holes, since the holes are
underneath. This is great, when you are throwing a plate or platter.

Hope this helps.

All the best.

Hi Buds,

I've been using Plasti-Bats, small square, 12" & 14" for years and love them. I
is true that sometimes one must be careful when lifting bats with large, flared
bowls so that they do not warp.

They don't take up much room, never had one break (but they don't do too well on
top of hot, wood stoves).

Yours for fine crafts,
