Aiko Ichimura on mon 31 jan 00

Hello,

My name is Aiko Ichimura. I just joined this list Serve.
I am also a member of Japanese Pottery list Serve from Japan.
One of our members had started teaching pottery class and he has a American
student.
He is trying to explain basic Japanese techniques but did not know English
terms for those
techniques. Does anyone know any book, dictionary, or web site that has
English and Japanese
term for pottery techniques.
Any hint or suggestions would be appreciated.
TIA

Hi Aiko..... Yes, there is such a book.... Written in both English and
Japanese.
It is called 'The Japanese Pottery Handbook' written by Penny
Simpson, Lucy Kitto, and Kanji Sodeoka. It is loaded with illustrations
and all in all a delightful book.

If your friend does not have access to a copy, send me an address and I
will share mine for as long as he needs it.

Aiko-san,
Konichiwa. Clayart ni irashaimasu! If you'd like, why not run those
Japanese pottery terms by us. I spent 27 months in Japan doing my pottery
aprenticeship in Mashiko and Kyoto (1977 to 1980). I know that Mel
Jacobsen could certainly be of help here, and I'm guessing that there are
others too. Could be kind of fun.
Also, I have a book from 1979, which may or may not still be in print
called "The Japanese Pottery Handbook", written in both English and
Japanese, by Penny Simpson, Lucy Kitto, and Kanji Sodeoka. It has
possibly every pottery term you could come up with, in both languages.
Published by Kodansha International Ltd. ISBN # 0-87011-373-9 JBC #
2072-787060-2361, LCC # 78-71314
Hope this is of help. Gambatte kudasai. David

Konnichiwa, Aiko.... o genki desu ka?... There is a book titled: The
Japanese Pottery Handbook by Penny Simpson, Lucy Kitto and Kanji Sodeoka
that is written both in English and Japanese that might be helpful....
copyright 1979 by Kodansha International .... also distributed by Kodansha
America, Inc in New York.... ISBN0-87011-373-9
I took it with me to Muroran Hokkaido in August 1998 for my exhibition
there ... I put it on the table at the entrance to the exhibit... many
potters had not seen it ... the enjoyable and exciting aspect for me was
that they autographed my copy... so mine is a wonderful keepsake as well
as a reference... dewa mata.... Paul Watkins

Aiko san,
Here are a few translations if my memory serves correctly;
Rough wedging; aramomi
Spiral wedging; kikumomi
Slurry/slip; dobe
wheel/throwing bench; rokuroba
Trimming chuck; kezuri no dai
Mingei; folkcraft, folkart
opening clay from top of hump (while throwing off hump); tsuchitori
Somebody help us out on the others. Good luck translating wabi-sabi in
40 words or less. How about "the profound and infinite beauty of
something old and worn", oh, forget it!
Please note that kanji (Chinese characters) don't appear on western
computers without special software. If you use Romanji (Roman alphabet),
we can see the Japanese words. David
