studio design & gas kiln design

Hello!

I'm Jan from Malaysia. I am going thru the archives to get some answers to
some questions before asking for help but i am running out of time.

I will be building my studio soon, my architect is waiting for my
ideas..etc and because pottery books are so limited here in Malaysia, i
cannot seem to find any drawing/plan of a good potter's studio design.

I understand from the archive that an article was written by Alistar young
in CM Sept. 1999, page 82 on this topic. And also an article by Ric
Swenson, CM 1981 Janaury, I wonder if someone could kindly send me a
photocopy of the article?

Also, i can't get hold of Fred Olsen's book on gas kiln design, and we have
a friend who has offered to help me build my gas kiln if i give him the
specifications and details as to the materials i would like to use..BUT - I
have never used or fired a gas kiln before and i do not know what makes a
good gas kiln.
but i am reading up now but i do need help...

Does anyone out there have any gas kiln design/drawings (not for big time
production) that is cost effective, gives good/stable firings for reduction
& oxidation glazes....?
I do not have as yet a fixed budget, no limitations on size or any
preconcieved ideas, so any drawings/ advice will be gratefully accepted.

thank you very much.

i would reccommend you get a copy of The Art of Firing By Nils Lou. Lot
of good info there. I believe you can get plans from him also. His
e-mail in the book is lou@linfield.edu.

Thanks for the rec. Dan, For the record, I have just completed rewriting
and adding latest design changes in MFT plans. "The NEW MFT" It's $20
which includes shipping. NOTE: email address in book is WRONG. It is:
nlou @linfield.edu. NL

For the record.....A couple of the redesign items for the flattop are an
improved lid brick configuration which seems to add much strength and
stability to the top. On the old configuration we found that you had to
keep tightening for 10 or so firings as the brick settled into it's new
home. On this one, it seemed to have settled in within 3 firings, although
I still check the tightness of the frame every 5 firings or so.

Nils also widened the door by 9".....Betsy swears I enlarged the kiln when I
did this. It makes a huge difference in ease of loading and kinds of pieces
you can fire....a platter or big bowl can now hang well outside the stacking
column of shelves.

Many thanks for these ideas, Nils.

Best....

Tom (and Nils),
You know, now that you mention it, I do think the door on my MFT is too
narrow! It never occurred to me until now. Funny. By the way, what is the
new configuration for the top bricks?

Steve,
The old configuration had the bricks all lined up in rows....front to back,
side to side. In the new one, they're laid out offset. Also, a couple of
center bricks are laid horizontally to tie the outside rows into the center.
Nils recommends 3"x4.5"x9" brick. Less joints mean less movement.

I understand the above is the principal, but not the diagram. There is a
diagram towards the back of "Art of Firing" by Mr. Lou.

Nils, are you going to be at NCECA and will you have copies of the plans
available?
