the reason potters put ring feet on pots, is so they have
a handle to hold the pot while glazing.

(i know vince will jump ten feet at this, he did when i told
his entire class that the reason for ring feet is.)

but, really, the ring foot lifts the pot, makes a wonderful
finish to a pot, and is a great handle to use when glazing.

potters have known that since the first century.

other than that over statement...
in japan:

we filled the inside of the container full of glaze...counted.
then poured out.
waited....waxed the bottom, held the pot from the inside, then
dipped, bottom first to the rim.
slick as wink.

Mel,
I've heard that before I got into making pots, and been taught that.
I've also heard(more recent times), it saves time/space in loading a kiln...
Why have a bunch of pots on weak little pieces of metal or have a clay stilt
stick to a pot.
