Thanks, Ivor, for that info on the welding rods which withstand the high
temps. I never would have thought of that! Much appreciated.
As to your hoped for thread on beauty of porcelain coming from its
translucency, my work is not a very good example, since most of my
porcelain bottles are not thin enough to exhibit that feature. There is
something about that white clay body which is part of its appeal,
however, even if it doesn't exhibit the translucency. Glazes seem purer,
there is a certain aura about high fire porcelain glazes which can't be
(oops, never say "can't") replicated with white stonewares and lower fire
earthenwares. Perhaps part of their appeal for me is knowing that if my
bigger pieces WERE thin enough, they would be translucent. Perhaps there
is some interaction between the clay body and the glaze at that
temperature which makes for a subtle glaze translucency or something...I
don't really know. Time to run, and I'll have to think about this some
more. Perhaps others will follow up on the thread.
