firing temp. of local clay

updated thu 23 dec 99

Hi,
Can somebody suggest me how to proceed? I have a local clay, fired it to
cone 05. Would like to fire higher. Tried cone 7, the pots slumped.
Currently I'm not firing kilns in different temp.ranges. How can I find out
what temp. this clay can stand, other than firing a kiln to a higher cone,
and so forth? It doesn't seem practical. I can not afford to make a
kilnload for a testfiring plus adapted glazes up to perhaps cone 4 or 5.
Any experience or suggestions for shortcuts?
Many thanks. Merry X'mas and happy new year.
Jeff
