I'm a secondary art teacher seeking information on art schools/universities.=
I
just had a visit from a former student who is currently attending his last =
year
at a community college in the Pasco, Wa. area. He is an excellent artist, =
whose
first love is baseball -he's looking for a 4-year institution that offers =
both.
Currently his search in focusing at schools west of the Mississippi, only
because that is where his coach may be able to get him on a team. He gave =
me
the names of possibilities: Sanata Clara, Ca., Fresno State, Univ Iowa, Iowa
State, Univ of Hawaii, Univ. of Wa. Does anyone have opinions on the art
departments at these schools?
While I have your attention, my daughter is trying to make a final decision =
on
an art school, and has narrowed it down to 4 places that also offer
architecture: Univ. of Wa., Univ of Colorado, Univ of Oregon and Savannah
College of Art and Design. What are all of your recommendations?
Thank-you as always. The information I get from ClayArt has been =
invaluable.

Cross Iowa State off your list-- art takes low priority at that engineering /
agriculture / vet focused school. (I went there myself eons ago): University o
Iowa has (or did have back when the world was young & I was in college) a very
strong art department-- also many famous writers are from U of I-- my favorite
John Irving.

How about Arizona State University in Tempe, a "suburb" of Phoenix? Big
baseball program and nice ceramic facilities. Kurt Weiser is Dept. head,
Jeanne Porter is also there... The undergraduate program is really quite
good. Patricia Sannit--We recently moved here, and have no personal
interest in ASU, just so you know!

I haven't been advertising it like I should, but the NCECA Ceramic Institutions
Database is up and running and as soon as we can get more schools and other
educational instituitions to enter their data it will be a very useful source of
information.
You can reach the database at http:165.95.9.63/In2/
Anyone can search the database.
In order to enter information you must get a password. To get one email Susan Fi
(susanf@awod.com )or if that doesn't work, me.

You can search for east and west by using zip codes. Anything 40000 or larger
should be in thew Mid west or West of there I believe.

I got a masters degree at Santa Clara University. Shocked me to see
there was an art department, but it's possible. They are heavy into
engineering (being in the Silicon Valley) but also have very strong
liberal arts. They are a Jesuit school, so there is a lot of focus on
contributing to society, helping the community, ethics, etc, not just
making a buck. That part is nice.
