I have been looking for a heavily textured glaze/slip.
I came across this. Sorry but have I lost the source.

China clay 50%
Hyplas 71 50%

What is Hyplas 71, and are there subs for it?

Thanks

Al,
The analysis that I have for Hyplas 71 is as follows:-
MgO 0.051
CaO 0.009
K2O 0.103
Na2O 0.033
Fe2O3 0.029
Al2O3 1.000
SiO2 5.865
TiO2 0.108

MW 467.3

If you care to go to my web site
http://www.dhpot.demon.co.uk
'Pottery Techniques' / 'Transporting Glazes' you will see this listed
under ball clays with some other ball clays for comparison. From those
that I have listed, Kentucky Stone seems the nearest.

Hyplas 71 is a ball clay from English China Clays in the UK. It is in
fact a very plastic Devon Ball Clay. We use it neat with a bit of
stain/oxide/opacifier as our standard production off the shelf
decorating slip. It fits anything at any temperature we have tried it at
so it's pretty magical from our point of view. At stoneware it becomes
translucent which I like as colours become deeper and stronger as a
result.

Hi,
I have been trying to locate the ball clay ":Hyplas 71" for some clay
formulas. I can not find it for sale anywhere. Does it still exist? Is
there a reasonable substitute for it? Does anyone know where it might be
for sale?
Thanks,
Shelly

Hyplas is an English ball clay, mined and produced by ECC (English
China Clays company) - a big supplier in the UK. Or it was when I
worked in Devon, way back when.

It is still mined by ECC only they are now called Imreys (International
company, French owned).
Hammill & Gillespie import several UK Ball Clays, but that one is not on
their list. Pity, as it is the basis for a number of VERY good cone 9/10
clays.
It is very popular over here.
