I think the following quote is germaine to the recent thread on ideas vs.
techniques:

=22Pottery is eighty percent technique and only twenty percent art, but the =
most
important is the latter. This can create conflict - if you have an idea but=
no
technique, you can't make anything worthwhile. Technique and idea have to =
be
balanced.=22 Ah Leon, 1996

Interesting quote I thought and not surprising that Ah Leon
puts the ratio at 80:20. Probably a lot of people would think
this a little heavily weighted to the skill side but I think he's
probably right. Skill and craftmanship are what tie us all together
here at Clayart after all, as can be seen from the endless stream
of questions and answers.

As we look through the latest CM we might love this article hate
that one but whatever are personal prejudices are the thing we have
in common is the time and effort spent learning to handle clay.

The paradox of our medium is that the technique that defines us
is as Ah points out, meaningless without "idea". Not so sure where
"idea" comes from, maybe only the best teachers can impart that,
or sometimes it comes from the students themselves as Mel said.
