low fire using tucker's clay

updated tue 30 nov 99

Hello everyone'

I am inquiring about anyonelse who is currently using Tucker's Low White
and Low Red. I have been in contact with Ron Roy and have been testing
glazes to match these clay bodies and would like trade results with
anyone who is willing. I have talked to others in the past but all I
have reached work with stoneware on a daily basis, not earthenware.

If any of the potters out there are able to assist me I look forwar to
your response. Hopefully I can help you as well.

Hi Craig,

Well, I'll give you a starting point for testing. I work with earthenware
part of the time and my base glaze started with a simple recipe from an
article by Glen Lukens: I think he just called it Low Fire Glaze:
650 grams feldspar
400 grams gerstley borate

to which you can add oxides and opacifiers, etc.

The last time I made this I used: 6 and one half Cups Feldspar (custer)
4 Cups Gerstley Borate
1 cup Superpax
1 cup frit (Ferro 3269), but 3134 would probably be fine
This gives me a basic white. Have no idea how this will work on your clay
bodies, but it's a start, if no one else gives you something they have used
with your Tucker's clay.

Just in case anyone wants to sub frit 3269 for 3134 - they are quite different.

F3134
SiO2 - 46.5
Na2O - 10.3
CaO - 20.1
B2O3 - 23.1

F3269
SiO2 - 49.7
Al2O3 - 13.2
K2O - 8.10
Na2O - 11.10
ZnO - 1.00
CaO - 0.10
B2O3 - 15.2
F - 1.6

In this case (below) - because there is no alumina in 3134 - you wold have
to test for running.
