the hunt for a good red glaze

updated sun 28 nov 99

Hiya folks,

I've been searching for a good red glaze. Not a red red, but more of a
wine/burgundy red. If any of you have a cone 6 recipe for such a creature
could you send it my way? I've decided all the ^6 recipes for wine red
colors have gone into hibernation for the winter. :)

Thanks!

I have a great pink to burgandy which does have nice red qualities in cone
6 (actually does well from 5 to 7). I don't have it with me here at work
but I will bring it in and send it Monday. I got it off the clayart
postings so maybe some kind soul will get it to you sooner. Rudy in San Diego

Sarah,
I just made up a batch of this recipe last week and am very pleased with it.
It might suit your purposes.

Hi Sarah,

I have a good burgundy you might want to try, cone 6 oxidation. I use it on
tiles and it's pretty stable. It breaks to a gray-blue on the edges. I
don't know how it would look on a pot. It settles miserably so I put Axner's
Flocs in it, that usually works. I also don't make more than 2,000 grams at
a time. Good luck.

Neph Sy 51
Whiting 20
Flint 18
Kaolin 9
Zinc ox 3

Add Mason stain 6381 Blackberry Wine 5%

Sieve to mesh 80 at least, otherwise you'll have a gray speckle which I don't
particularly care for.

Sarah, I want to second the recomendation for kemp 17. It is a lovely deep
burgandy with 6% tin and .75% chrome oxide. I want to try adding cobalt to
see if it will shade to a warm purple.

This Pink to Burgandy, (^6 ox), gloss, very stable (runs very little if at
all alone), use heavier than lighter coat for good reds because too watery
or too light a coat turns gray. Good with overlays of black or white in
combo or alone, accepts cobalt carbonate brushed over for blue to black
tones. Very reliable from cone 5 to 7 on stoneware or porcelin. Obtained
from clayart.

Gerstley Borate 20.68
Nepheline Sye 16.29
EPK 11.34
Whiting 19.52
Flint 32.16

Tin oxide 5.00
Green chrome oxide 0.15

Here's another turquoise (^5 - 9) which I test fired a small batch because
the recipe didn't add up to 100% and my chemistry and formulation knowledge
is zip. It came out very nicely on porcelin and stoneware cone 5 clays. I'm
anxious to hear if anyone has a similar glaze recipe which may be this one
which had something missing? Thanks Rudy

Val's Turquoise (^5 -9)

Custer Feldspar 27.60
Gerstley Borate 16.87
Flint 21.32
Whiting 08.82
Dolomite 02.90
Copper Carbonate 02.34
Bentonite 00.80
