lead frit toxicity?

Hello everyone and greetings.

I have a concern and confusion regarding lead frits and toxicity. I am
pregnant and have been extremely careful around the studio to keep away from
anything that might be harmful to my child. I have some low-fire porcelain
that I created using lead frit 3124 before I was pregnant and would really
like to use it now. The sources that I have seen say things like "it is as
harmless as a powder" which doesn't mean anything to me really. Can the lead
still leach through my hands when throwing and tox me out?? Thanks for any
wisdom any of you might have.

Jessica,

My immediate instinct is to stay away from lead as much as possible, even
tho at 40, I don't intend to ever be pregnant again. Once lead is in your
body, it doesn't go away.

As for your frit 3124, if that's what you meant to type, it's not a lead
frit (I checked Insight) and should be safe with normal precautions. (Always
wear an approved mask.)

Congratulations--hope your pregnancy is going pleasantly.

I may be misunderstanding you or you bought the frit from a manufacturer
with a different numbering system, but the 3124 I'm familiar with does not
contain lead.

Are you sure it's a lead frit?

Hi Jessica:

I think you can breathe easily. If you are talking about Ferro Frit 3124,
it contains absolutely no lead at all according to the anaysis. Sodium,
potassium, calcium, and some boron, plus some alumina and silica, but no lead.

Hi, Jessica.
Two issues here. First (and there have been and probably will be again,
discussions about this from more knowledgeable people than I) my
understanding about the safety of lead frits is that they are a bit
safer for the potter to handle than raw lead, but still hazardous. And
there is no difference in toxicity after firing.
But, more important in your case, is that frit 3124 is not a lead frit
to start with. The formula is CaO .70 K2O .02 Na2O .28 B2O3 .55
Al203 .27 SiO2 2.56. As you can see, it's a calcium borate frit,
useful as a substitute for Gerstley Borate.
So no lead worries for you or the impending little one.

If you use lead in your studio you should be tested for lead in your
blood.period.
Your kiln should be so well vented that it never smells like kiln. Then you
should talk to Monona. But to the best of my knowlege Ferro Frit 3124 has no
lead. No Lead, a fine solution.

If it's Ferro frit 3124 there is no lead- If there is lead there is more
danger from firing it - I would advise you not do it.
