Hello Folks,

I hope to enter my first national competition soon so wish me luck! But the
prospectus asks for a " heavy plastic cover" for my slides - where does one
aquire this? This is for one slide or for a whole sheet? They only ask for
three.

Is there anything else that I need to know about submitting for competition?

Does anyone have any tips? So you get the prospectus and throw/work from
there? Do you just try to work every day and submit what you have? Why do
we enter competitions? I know money helps if you win but does it also give
you name recognition for admission to shows?

TIA,

The only time I would get the prospectus first is if it were a theme show and
I wanted more pertinant information. Otherwise I just make things and take
slides every few months to have them available. I do my own photography
using a graduated black and white background. As far as why I enter
competitions, well honestly I think it is just an ego and resume building
activity. I personally like challenges. After ten years of this I am
getting close to stopping this attempted conquest. Rarely do I receive a
prize and only on occasion do I sell my work. Sometimes I do not even want
to sell the work because I want to use the slide again and I am doing one of
a kind pieces. Between the entry fees and shipping fees I spend several
hundred dollars each year on competitions. Name recognition does exist
within small circles but you are not going to become famous by going this
route alone. Of course building a resume may help you obtain notoriety in
other directions. I would guess that I enter between two to six each month
and my acceptance rate varies from about 40 to 50%.

The quality of the slides is what gets you in (or doesn't). As far as those
plastic covers, any photo shop should carry them. They do come in sheets but
you can just cut them up to suit your purpose.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.
