Steve,

One of the =22fun=22 assignments I have used in my ceramic materials courses
over the many years I have been teaching them is to compound a glaze out of
non-traditional, non =22ceramic supplier=22 materials. There are a few =
other
caveats built into the assignment to restrict certain uses and for safety
issues. This assignment is presented well after the students have
thouroughly studied the chemistry of ceramics....near the end of the
course. So students start reading the labels of all sorts of commerical
consumer stuff....and come up with some unique =22glaze=22 recipes. Tums,
Rolaids, Kaopectate, Mylanta, Pepto Bismol and other such stuff frequently
ends up in there =3Cg=3E.

I guess it comes under the category of =22stupid pet tricks=22 =3Cbg=3E

Important to realize that this is more of an educational approach to
cementing learning concepts than a =22real use=22 approach. As a source of
ceramic oxides....... the usual suppliers are far cheaper =3Cg=3E. This =
also
helps to get students thinking =22outside the box=22 when it comes to raw
materials....and often helps gets some interested in utilizing local raw
materials sources. (I also do =22dirt glazes=22 at cone 10 =3Cg=3E.)

So....you can do it... and it is fun to try...... but not particularly
practical.

Best,

....................john

PS: As you use this weird type stuff .... you have to be on the lookout
for =22toxics=22.

Hello Steve,

I saw a glaze made out of kaopectate and pepto bismol; I believe it was
50/50. it was yellowish. Not very appealing, but we had a good laugh. :)

Yes, I have learned from my mistakes...
I can reproduce them exactly.
