Hi Clayarters,

I'm looking for a matt purple raku glaze ... am trying to duplicate the color
of a fig. I've been experimenting with poor results. Any help would be much
appreciated.

thanks,

Hi Karen,
Sorry I can't help you with a purple matt glaze, but wanted to thank you for
the glaze you gave us several weeks ago "Karen's Killer Cobalt". It is
wonderful! I have tried it by itself and over a white glaze. It fealthers
beautifully over the white. Thanks for sharing. It is one of my favorite raku
glazes. Did you ever find a nice tourqoise crackle? I've tried several and
haven't found a good one yet.

Hi Vicki,

Glad to know you like the "killer cobalt". As for the turquoise crackle,
since I needed a very even and intense color, I ended up spraying on
underglazes, then overspraying with raku clear. It was perfect.
Since my posting, I have come up with a beautiful "fig purple", in case
anyone is interested:

spodumene 35
gerstley bor. 60
ball clay 5
mangan.diox. 6
tin oxide 5

happy rakuing!

i have a theory on this one...

if you take a base white raku glaze, and add colorant you should be able to
eventually get the glaze you want...i did some of that with a raku white
base this summer in an indy study we did copper carb i think and got some
teals...(i had to drop the class so its a little hazy...)

i think you could buy a mason stain and try that...however my class notes on
manganeze say that it produces brown and purple colors
that purple and violet color is produced best in an alkaline glaze and at a
low temp...when you go the non alkaline and high temp route you tend to get
brown but you can still achieve purple at a high temp im sure if you used an
alkaline based glaze
manganeze is a very strong flux and my professor suggested using 2-10% in
glazes...

ohh sorry and i think that an alkaline based glaze is sodium based...but
dont take my word for it...its a little side note i made next to the notes
my professor gave...

can anyone further clarify this for me? ive never tested this before but
would like to know if im wrong and where i might be corrected...
