I've found something that works for me... When I throw, the bench is pretty
much the level of the wheel, a hair lower, perhaps. I put the pedal and my
other foot up on one bat and a brick, respectively. This puts my knees
higher than my hips and feels quite comfortable.

Works for me. Might not work for everyone.
