Hi all.
I hope someone can help me.
For at least 10 years I have been firing my kiln using Orton's Coneputer,
the precursor of Orton's Auto Fire. The Coneputer has stopped working and I
have been having trouble firing my L & L kiln using the automatic shut off.
I can fire successfully using the automatic shut off if I am firing to cone
05. However, if I attempt to fire to cone 8 or 9 the cone in the automatic
shut off breaks long before I reach temperature. Does any one have any
suggestions?

Marion,

First of all, are the mal-functioning cones old or new? Is it possible
they have suffered some water damage leading them to break rather than
melt? I'd try another pack of cones.

Secondly, do you have a vent under your kiln which might be creating a
vibration capable of repelling or breaking the cones? You can check this
easily by turning the vent on and GENTLY touch the prongs that hold the
cone in your kiln. If you feel a vibration, you may need to make an
adjustment to correct it. This may be as easy as leveling the feet of the
kiln stand, or it might require tightening the motor mount on your vent
(the screws work loose over time) or even replacing the little rubber mount
pads. I had a sitter that spit the cones out after an hour of firing until
I stopped the vent from vibrating.

I have a broken cone 03 sitting on my table in my studio that matches
your description exactly - intended to send it to Orton but haven't had
the chance yet. We've had this problem sporadically with 03's and 04's
in our department. If I hear from Orton, I'll let you know.
