kiln shelves, again

I have been re-reading the posts on kiln shelves and can't find an answer to
my question. I am in KY, and need 2-4 new kiln shelves, depending on what I
can afford.
I want them to be LIGHT as possible, as I am getting a bit long in the
tooth, and soft in the back. I need 18"X18" shelves, and Axner doesn't have
them. I no longer take CM, so can anyone make a suggestion.
Thanks,
Rosanne Cleveland-King

Dear Rosanne:

Thorley Refractories, Inc.
11616 Center Street
South Gate, CA 90280
310-633-2647

Cordierite, appx. 50%, Mullite, appx. 35%. Corundum and other converted
minerals make up the balance.
Recommended to Cone 10 (2,350 degrees F).

I use Thorley, exclusively, in my kilns for shelves and shelf supports. Have
only bought through dealers, or distributors, but Cindy Carr (whom you know from
the KY Guild of Artist's & Craftsmen's shows), tells me she buys directly from
them. Next time I order shelves, I will order with Cindy to get a better
price. It may be several months, however, as I am planning to build a new kiln
and don't quite know yet what shelf configuration I will use.

Yours for fine crafts,

Jean Wadsworth Cochran
Fox Hollow Pottery
New Haven, KY

Axner can have the shelves made for you. There is a set-up fee for the shelf
mold. The shelves are made of cordierite.

Roseanne, I've found Highwater Clay in NC to be reasonable and carry quite a
variety. They're online at http://www.highwaterclays.com/
.
For some strange reason, they don't have an 800 number, but here's their
other phone & mail info.

I am also in Kentucky and just bought shelves after shopping around. I got
them from the Ohio franchise of Laguna. They were also quite reasonable from
Ceramics Supply in Louisville.
