that motor is essentially the same as a starter
motor on a car.

take it to a small engine repair shop and they will
be able to replace the seal on it. While they have it
open, if it is really old, ask how much for new
brushes.

Good luck!

I'm sorry, but that motor is nothing like the starter motor on a car. They
are completely different in design. The motor here is a integral gearmotor.
Sharon should take it to an electric motor shop or an appliance repair shop,
where the seal can easily be replaced. It is important to check the
condition of the bearings or bushings, however, because if there is any wear
in them then the new seal will fail very quickly. It is possible that this
motor contains brushes, although most small modern alternating current
motors do not. But if it does have brushes they should be checked as you
suggest, and replaced if they are badly worn. If they need to be replaced,
then the commutator (the contacts on the armature - the rotating central
core of the motor) should be cleaned as well.
Best wishes -
