slipcasting v. handbuilt

Here's a twist on this topic:

My slipcast sconce designs are in competition with $15 imported fixtures.
In order to sell, they must be made as efficiently as possible, which means
slipcasting.

Meanwhile, two of my local competitors -- long-time potters both -- have
incorporated my designs into their sconces. Mine still are nicer, I feel,
but theirs are improved. For one of them in particular, my idea was the
first new one she's had in years!

I'm not whining about intellectual property here -- good ideas will always
spread. But I do find it interesting that a couple of unspoken assumptions
seem to go unchallenged in this thread:
- the slipcaster is the ripper-offer.
- that there is any absolute moral high ground (and the hand-builder is up
on it, looking down on others!)

I say, challenge both of them, out loud and in your heart of hearts.

best,
Jeff
