george ohr and artists and their skills today

I just went through the web page about George Ohr, because I entered
into the upcoming exhibition and do not know much about him.
It makes me sad to learn that he acted mad to drew attention to his
work. How many talent and skills does an artist need to be successful?
I get the impression that in a sence all artists are delivered to the
rest of the world.
This brings me to the catalogue of the Ceramic Monthly International
competition that I just bought and read from the first page to the very
last artist statement. It gave me some insight of what is wanted on
exhibitions like that, but I wonder what is genuinely selling today. I
think one or two pieces of sculpture in a general interior will be
enough. A collector may buy one of a kind from artists they like.
It seems to me that the real seller is the old confentional functional
work. Then on exhibitions one seldom see entries on functional
pieces(full sets). Can it be that potters do not meet the requirements
or is it a matter of selectors preferance?
It will be interesting to know how you go to work to enjoy your work
and make a good enough income to keep enjoying it.
- Why do you choose your particular market?
- Why do you enter into competitions/exhibitions?
- Why do you prefer to stay away from competitions?
- Do you have any trix that draw attention to your work?
One last remark about Ohr: It is ironic that people will pay thousands
of dollars today to get his work. How many of us will achieve this
years after our death?

Antoinette, Remember Ohr didn't sell much of the art pottery we so admire
today in his lifetime. We have so much of it because it had been boxed and
stowed in a loft and was found by his decendents. He supported his family
with functional work but never stopped making what he loved. There is also
some question about how much faking he had to do to appear so odd. A little
nuttiness is no bar to making great art. (I keep telling myself :^).
