bisque temp. cones and mini bars.

Hi.all,

I agree with Mo, Ben and Ray's comments that there is a difference
between the bending (and turning off of the kiln) using small cones in a
kiln-sitter and the large witness cones checked visually through the spy
hole.

In practice the mini bars/cones turn the kiln off 1 cone lower than the
observed bending of the large ones.

In addition, the information provided by Orton about their cones also
says that the small cones, when used as witness cones, bend at a higher
temp. than the large ones. If this is so then Ray's point, that the
weight of the sensing rod has a considerable effect which causes an
earlier bending of the small cone; is particularly relevant.

Cheers,

Mike.

So Mike, to make sure I understand what you have said , if I am using a
cone 6 cone in the kiln sitter it really only fires to a cone 5?

Hi John,

If you really want to come as close to firing to a specific cone as you can,
using a witness cone in addition to the setter is the way to do it
regardless of your using mini bars or small cones in the setters because
in time, from the heat in the kiln, the rod in the setter will bend and/or
disintegrate somewhat (not always visible to the naked eye).

So not matter what number cone you use you can't be sure what cone you are
firing to without the witness cone. Also, if you want to be more accurate,
you could put a witness cone on each shelf in the kiln because each shelf
often times fires to a different cone or temp.
