sawdust firings in garbage cans

Dear Gary, In response to your query re: holes in garbage cans. Yes,
I put holes in all my metal containers. I usually use about a dime-to
nickel-sized hole every 8" or so around the sides of the container about
1" from the bottom. If its a tall container (garbage cans) I often add
a second row 1/2 of the way up. Ideally you want a slow firing, so the
size and number of holes may affect how much air gets in and how fast
your firing will be. On a windy day, I plug some of my holes with clay
to slow down the firing. I have used or seen used metal containers of
all shapes and sizes, from maple syrup cans, to pails, to washtubs to
garbage cans to drums. All can work well as long as you have a slow
firing and suit the number and size of the holes to the container! Good
luck, Nancy
